More than 200 000 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students have received their allowances, but around 12 000 remain unpaid after being flagged in a data verification process by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme.
The scheme confirmed it successfully disbursed R621 million to 203 653 TVET students on 17 April 2026, in line with its commitment to ensure uninterrupted teaching and learning across institutions. The payments outline an important step in stabilising allowance distribution following ongoing administrative challenges.
However, NSFAS also revealed that approximately 12 000 students were excluded from this payment cycle due to what it described as “data exchange inconsistencies” between colleges and its internal systems. At this stage, it remains unclear how many of these students may ultimately qualify once records are corrected.
The financial aid body has not yet confirmed whether a supplementary payment will be processed, stating that this will depend on the outcome of ongoing data verification efforts.
In response, NSFAS has deployed specialist teams to colleges nationwide and launched regional working sessions with institutional staff to urgently resolve discrepancies. These interventions began this week, with priority placed on correcting student records and ensuring eligible beneficiaries are included in upcoming disbursements.
Institutions have been urged to fast-track data corrections, as NSFAS emphasised that accurate and timely submission of student information is critical to avoid further delays. Allowances often cover essential living costs such as food, transport, and accommodation, meaning any disruption can directly affect attendance and academic performance.
While payments to the majority have brought relief, uncertainty remains for those still awaiting confirmation of their status. NSFAS has called for patience, assuring stakeholders that it is working towards a swift resolution while maintaining transparency and accountability.
