OR Tambo District Municipality handed over a branding and printing machine to local entrepreneur Mama Nonkwelo during a community empowerment event in Mthatha.The support will help her expand production of her well-known traditional remedy, Defender. The ECDC, Link Pharmacy and Maderia Pharmacy all attended the handover.
What Happened
The municipality presented the machine to Mama Nonkwelo to help her print and brand her products independently. The new machine will cut her production costs and speed up packaging. Defender, her popular traditional medicine, continues to gain support from local customers and pharmacies.
A community member said, “It inspires us when government supports small producers. Mama Nonkwelo deserves this growth.”
Official Response
OR Tambo District officials said the donation forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen small businesses and promote local manufacturing. Partners such as the ECDC and local pharmacies also welcomed the initiative, saying the machine will help Mama Nonkwelo scale her operations.
A municipal representative said, “We want local entrepreneurs to grow and reach new markets. This is how we build a stronger district economy.”
Community Impact
The support is expected to increase production of Defender and improve access for customers who rely on the product. Moreover, the gesture encouraged residents to buy from local entrepreneurs and help strengthen small businesses across the district.
