The soldiers were on routine patrol duties as part of Operation Corona when their vehicle attempted to cross a river swollen by recent heavy rains. The strong current swept two military police officers from the vehicle.

One body has been recovered. A second member has not yet been found.

Official Response

The SANDF has confirmed that a full-scale search and rescue operation is underway. It includes:

  • South African Police Service (SAPS) Diving Rescue Team
  • SANDF Oryx helicopter support
  • Military Police personnel on the ground

The rescue mission remains active as of 26 December.

“All efforts are being made to locate the missing member as quickly as possible,” said SANDF Communications Head, Mr Siphiwe Dlamini .

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Ms Angie Motshekga, along with senior defence officials and SANDF Chief General Rudzani Maphwanya, have extended condolences to the family of the deceased soldier and expressed solidarity with the family of the missing member.
