The O.R. Tambo District Municipality has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting families affected by the devastating June floods, announcing significant progress in providing both temporary and permanent housing solutions.
According to the municipality, Temporary Emergency Accommodation regulations initially allowed for one month of support, which was successfully extended by an additional seven days. However, with disaster funds now depleted, the municipality said it could not continue the extension further.
Over 3,000 Affected by Floods in OR Tambo as Government Ramps Up Relief Efforts
Families displaced by the floods have since been safely relocated to O.R. Tambo Hall, with transport provided for all affected households. Working alongside the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA), the municipality has begun constructing 20 Temporary Residential Units at Decolyne, completing up to four units each day.
In a further boost to relief efforts, the Department of Human Settlements has committed to delivering 400 additional housing units. Land for these units has already been secured, and a key planning meeting scheduled for 6 August is expected to fast-track long-term solutions for displaced families.
“We want to assure every family: support continues. We will not rest until every family is safely sheltered and no one is left behind,” the municipality said in a statement.
The municipality has called on stakeholders and community members to continue supporting its initiatives as rebuilding efforts intensify.
