A tragic road accident on the R61 at Beyele village between Ngcobo and Cofimvaba claimed nine lives on 31 December 2025. The Eastern Cape Provincial Government confirmed the incident involved a Toyota minibus taxi and a Toyota Avanza.

All four people in the Avanza and five passengers in the minibus were declared dead at the scene by emergency medical services. Eight other passengers from the minibus were injured and taken to All Saints Provincial Hospital for treatment.

Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane expressed deep condolences on behalf of the provincial government. He said:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of nine lives in this tragic accident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends, and communities affected.”
