What is happening?

The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has issued a traffic advisory for two planned blasting operations on the N2 between KwaBhaca and EmaXesibeni (Mount Ayliff). The road will be closed at 12pm for up to 30 minutes on both occasions.

If you’re travelling between Mthatha, Kokstad, Matatiele, or surrounding towns, expect temporary road closures and potential delays on 23 and 30 January 2026. Detours will add around 50 minutes to your journey. SANRAL is urging motorists to plan ahead and consider alternative routes to avoid disruption.

    • Exit N2 at Kokstad

    • Continue on R396 to Tsolo → join N2 again
  • OR via coastal route
    • Kokstad → Flagstaff → Lusikisiki
    • Follow R61 to Port St Johns → rejoin N2 to Mthatha

Additional travel time: ~50 minutes
Extra distance: ±69 km
