The arrest was carried out by Crime Prevention members from Mthatha Central Police Station on Friday, 24 April 2026. Police confirmed the suspect is facing charges of unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.

He is expected to appear before the Mthatha Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 28 April 2026.

The arrest forms part of an ongoing police campaign under the #GunsOffTheStreets initiative aimed at reducing gun-related crime in the area. Authorities have not released details about the type of firearm recovered or the circumstances leading to the arrest. This has not been confirmed.

No information has been provided about whether the suspect is linked to other crimes or if additional arrests are expected.

Police say the operation is part of broader efforts to stabilise communities affected by violent crime. In parts of the Eastern Cape, including Mthatha and surrounding areas, illegal firearms remain a major driver of shootings, robberies, and gang-related violence.

For local residents, this arrest signals continued police visibility, but also highlights the ongoing risk posed by unlicensed weapons in communities like Slovo Park. The presence of illegal guns directly affects safety, especially in densely populated areas.

The South African Police Service has not issued further comment beyond confirming the arrest and upcoming court appearance.

Residents are encouraged to report illegal firearms or suspicious activity to their nearest police station or through anonymous tip-off lines.
