The scourge of extortion continues to plague Mthatha, with numerous cases reported in and around the area. Despite damning evidence and eyewitness accounts, authorities have failed to take concrete action against the extortion syndicates. Community activist Dr Pumla Matshaya has slammed the lack of progress, saying that many people have bravely come forward to share crucial information with law enforcement, yet no arrests have been made.

The inaction has left victims and whistleblowers frustrated and emboldened the extortionists, according to Dr Matshaya. She called on law enforcement agencies to take immediate action to address the situation, saying that the community was losing faith in their ability to protect them.

With the extortion cases showing no signs of abating, residents are demanding justice and an end to the culture of impunity that has allowed the syndicates to flourish.
