The uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) has submitted a motion of no confidence in President Cyril Ramaphosa, citing mismanagement of the economy and failure to effectively tackle corruption. The motion, delivered to National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza on Tuesday, was filed by MKP parliamentary leader Dr. John Hlophe, who called for an emergency sitting of Parliament.

Dr. Hlophe accused President Ramaphosa of leading South Africa into crisis, stating that the Government of National Unity (GNU) lacks the commitment and strategy to build a better nation.

“The firing of the Minister of Higher Education is a very strategic thing to do on the part of President Ramaphosa. He’s doing it to get support from the DA so they vote for the budget,” said MKP Chief Colleen Makhubele, adding that the action falls short of addressing deeper systemic issues.

The MKP also questioned why Police Minister Senzo Mchunu remains in office, despite serious allegations raised by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Key Failures Highlighted by MKP

MKP leader Dr. Hlophe outlined several critical areas of concern under Ramaphosa’s leadership:

  • Persistently high crime rates, including murder, robbery, and gender-based violence
  • The South African Police Service’s failure to ensure public safety
  • Unemployment soaring above 50%, especially among youth
  • The absence of a clear economic recovery plan
  • Lack of transparency in state-owned enterprise corruption investigations

Dr. Hlophe argued that President Ramaphosa has had more than enough time to deliver meaningful change — yet South Africans continue to face poverty, joblessness, and insecurity.

“It’s clear the president has failed the people. It’s time for him to go,” Hlophe said.

As pressure mounts, the motion is expected to trigger a heated debate in Parliament. A vote on the motion of no confidence is still pending.
