The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, has reaffirmed government’s full support for the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into allegations regarding efforts or attempts to stop the investigation or prosecution of Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) cases. The statement follows concerns from the Commission about limited cooperation from some government departments.

What Happened

The Judicial Commission recently raised concerns about delays and insufficient cooperation in obtaining critical information from certain departments and agencies. These challenges have reportedly affected the Commission’s ability to investigate unresolved TRC-related matters, which focus on accountability for apartheid-era crimes.

Official Response

Minister Kubayi said the government remains committed to transparency and justice for victims and families. “We acknowledge the Commission’s concerns and have reached out to facilitate engagement to resolve administrative or procedural issues that may have caused delays,” she explained. She added that a request to postpone information submission deadlines was made in good faith to ensure the Commission has all necessary documentation.

Community Impact

The reaffirmation signals renewed government commitment to advancing justice and reconciliation for families still awaiting closure. The Department of Justice has pledged continued support to ensure the Commission completes its mandate effectively and independently.
