Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Velenkosini Hlabisa, joined the Matatiele community in the Eastern Cape to celebrate the triumphant homecoming ceremony of 114 initiates who successfully completed their transition into manhood through customary initiation.
The event marked a significant milestone for the young men and their families, symbolizing the completion of their rite of passage. Minister Hlabisa expressed his deep appreciation for the safe return of all 114 initiates, highlighting the importance of conducting customary initiation with care, respect, and adherence to proper procedures.
However, Minister Hlabisa also issued a stern warning against illegal initiation schools, which pose significant risks to the lives of initiates. This warning comes after a recent surge in initiate deaths at illegal schools, with 27 fatalities reported in the Eastern Cape alone.
The Minister emphasized the need for stricter measures to prevent such incidents, including the suspension of illegal initiation schools and prosecution of those responsible. He also encouraged parents to verify the registration of initiation schools before sending their children to them.
As the government continues to work towards ensuring a safer and more responsible initiation season, Minister Hlabisa’s warning serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of initiates.
