The Department of Social Development, together with the Department of Health and local community organisations, hosted a major World AIDS Day build-up event in Gqeberha under the theme Men Championing Change. Held in honour of International Men’s Day on 19 November, the gathering encouraged men to take charge of their health and break stigma around HIV testing.
What Happened
The campaign drew men from across Nelson Mandela Bay, creating a lively and supportive atmosphere. The programme promoted open conversations about health and dismantled harmful norms that keep many men away from clinics. The #RealMenGetTested message featured throughout the event, urging attendees to prioritise regular HIV testing as part of a healthy lifestyle.
Official Response
DSD representatives praised the strong turnout and the growing willingness among men to participate in health initiatives.
“This platform shows that men are ready to lead positive change,” an official said. “Knowing your status is the first step toward a healthier and empowered life.”
Health partners echoed this sentiment, emphasising that collaboration remains key as World AIDS Day approaches.
Community Impact
The event strengthened local efforts to reduce stigma and improve access to health services for men. It also highlighted the role fathers, partners, and young men play in building safer and more informed communities. With renewed momentum, the #RealMenGetTested campaign will continue across the Eastern Cape in the coming weeks.
