The foot and mouth disease (FMD) in the Eastern Cape is currently under control as the department of Rural Development and Agrarian Reform state veterinary Dr Lungile Jali confirms that the last positive case was identified on 19 September 2024.

Currently there are 37 farms that have been positively identified as affected by the FMD and they are under quarantine and are actively monitored in the Sarah Baartman District.
