On 12 September 2025, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has intensified infrastructure recovery efforts in Kariega, with Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe and Member of the Mayoral Committee(MMC) for Roads and Transport Councillor Yolisa Pali-Jongilanga leading an oversight visit to Matanzima Bridge and Ponana Tini Road, both undergoing major rehabilitation after last year’s devastating floods.

What Happened

The floods of 2024 left severe damage to critical infrastructure across Kariega, disrupting mobility and local economic activity. The Matanzima Bridge and Ponana Tini Road were among the hardest hit, requiring urgent reconstruction to restore safe travel and improve resilience against future disasters.

Official Response

Executive Mayor Lobishe said the work represents more than physical recovery:

“Rebuilding this infrastructure is about safeguarding livelihoods and ensuring communities are not cut off when disasters strike.”

MMC Pali-Jongilanga added that the projects will improve traffic flow, boost local business, and support safer transport for residents.

Community Impact

The restoration of Matanzima Bridge and Ponana Tini Road is expected to ease transport challenges faced by residents, taxi operators, and small businesses. It also signals municipal commitment to disaster resilience and inclusive growth, ensuring communities are not left vulnerable in future crises.
