The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has announced extended operating hours from December 10 to December 20, 2024, by two hours for all services. During this period, all offices will remain open for an additional two hours each day, closing at 6:00 PM instead of the usual 4:00 PM.

To further ease the stress of long queues, dedicated counters for collections of Smart ID Cards and passports have been introduced in larger offices, as space permits. This initiative aims to streamline the process for those picking up their essential documents.

Clients can also book appointments for applications or collections before arriving by using the Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS) available on the DHA website. However, walk-ins are welcome for those who haven’t had the chance to book, ensuring everyone has access to the services they need.

Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber expressed the department’s commitment to dignity and accessibility, saying, “We understand that many people are traveling over the festive period, which is why Home Affairs is going the extra mile to ensure South Africans get the documents they need to spend precious time with friends and family.”

Clients who have been waiting for three weeks or more are encouraged to visit their local Home Affairs office to collect their identification documents. With these improvements, the DHA aims to make this holiday season smoother and more enjoyable for all.
