A Grade 12 learner from Buhlanyanga village near Lusikisiki has died after being struck by lightning during a thunderstorm, according to a statement shared by her family.

The learner, Lathitha Nako (18), was sleeping at her family home on the night of Wednesday, 4 February 2026, when lightning struck the house during heavy rain and thunder. She died at the scene.

She was due to turn 19 years old in April 2026.

What is happening?

According to the family, three people were sleeping in one small room at the time of the incident. Two were sleeping on the bed, while one was sleeping on the floor.

During the storm, lightning struck the house and hit Lathitha, killing her instantly.

She was a Grade 12 learner at Buhlanyanga Senior Secondary School, under principal Mr Mbi, and was described as a committed learner preparing to complete her final year of school.
