A man from Libode was kidnapped after rumours spread that he received a Road Accident Fund (RAF) payout. Police acted fast, arresting four suspects across Mthatha, Libode and Bityi within hours.
What Happened
A 48-year-old man from Libode was rescued on Wednesday 11 December 2025, after he was kidnapped by a group of four men allegedly targeting his RAF payout.
The victim was last seen visiting his home in Thabo Mbeki RDP, Libode. His daughter became worried when his phone went off and alerted police.
Police found signs of a struggle at the victim’s home and launched a manhunt across Slovo Park, Corana and Bityi.
Official Response
The joint operation by Mthatha Flying Squad, Libode and Bityi police led to the arrest of all four suspects , aged between 18 and 30.
Major General Norman Modishana, OR Tambo District Commissioner, praised the swift response and said:
“We commend the members who worked tirelessly to bring the suspects to book. We urge residents to keep sensitive financial matters private.”
Community Impact
The victim was found alive at Ngweni locality, Bityi, where he was being held by two of the suspects. He had been tied up and guarded.
Police recovered:
- His cellphone and bank cards
- An undisclosed amount of cash withdrawn from his account
The suspects are facing charges of kidnapping and robbery. They will appear in Libode and Bityi Magistrates’ Courts soon.
