Former Deputy President of South Africa, David “DD” Mabuza, passed away at the age of 64 in a Sandton hospital on Thursday, according to EWN. Mabuza—who served under President Cyril Ramaphosa from February 2018 until his resignation in February 2023—was a veteran politician known for his extensive influence in Mpumalanga and national politics .
Born on 25 August 1960 in Phola, Mpumalanga, Mabuza rose from his early days as a teacher and union leader to become a dominant ANC figure. He served as Premier of Mpumalanga (2009–2018) and Deputy President of the ANC (2017–2022), before being appointed Deputy President of South Africa.
During his tenure, Mabuza played a key role in mobilizing support within the ANC’s “Premier League,” alongside Ace Magashule and Supra Mahumapelo, and was widely regarded as a skilled negotiator who helped influence leadership outcomes.
His political career was marked by both praise and controversy. Supporters highlighted his grassroots organization abilities and state-building contributions, while critics pointed to allegations of corruption and political violence in Mpumalanga—charges he consistently denied .
Upon his resignation in 2023, Mabuza left Parliament and was succeeded by Paul Mashatile in his national role.
