On 17 December 2025, the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality hosted a special Christmas handover ceremony at the Mbizana Civic Centre, focusing on supporting elderly women and orphaned children.
What Happened
Mayor Cllr TD Mafumbatha led the distribution of 96 Christmas vouchers, reaching all 32 wards in the municipality.
The beneficiaries included:
- 64 elderly-headed households (2 per ward)
- 32 child-headed families (1 per ward)
In addition, the mayor handed over practical items to five Elderly Centres across wards 13, 14, 15, 16, and 25.
Items delivered to the centres included:
- Gas stoves
- Cooking pots
- Chairs and tables
- Full crockery sets
“This is about care, dignity and building a supportive community,” said Speaker Cllr Cengimbo in closing remarks.
Official Response
The municipality said the initiative was part of its Government to the People programme, ensuring services reach the most vulnerable during the festive season.
Community Impact
Families in hardship will be able to enjoy a dignified Christmas, thanks to targeted, ward-based support.
The event also encouraged civic unity, with community members attending and participating in the programme.
