The Eastern Cape Provincial Government commends the recent arrest of eight individuals, including three former government officials and businesspeople, connected to an alleged R20 million tender fraud in the procurement of temporary classrooms and furniture for the Nelson Mandela Metro Municipality. The arrested individuals, former employees of the provincial administration in the Office of the Premier and Department of Education, are now under scrutiny.
The provincial government expresses appreciation for the swift action taken by law enforcement agencies, following internal investigations by Provincial Treasury. They pledge full cooperation with ongoing investigations, emphasizing their commitment to combatting corruption within their ranks.
This development underscores the effectiveness of the province’s anti-corruption efforts, demonstrating progress in holding those implicated in fraud and corruption accountable. The arrests closely follow International Anti-Corruption Day on December 9, which aimed to promote a united front against corruption involving government, law enforcement agencies, business, and civil society.
