The opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) has criticised former NSFAS administrator Freeman Nomvalo for leaving the organisation without a formal handover document, despite drawing R5.5 million in pay over his 10‑month appointment.
DA Deputy Spokesperson on Higher Education, Desiree van der Walt MP, revealed in a written parliamentary question that Nomvalo’s contract between April 2024 and February 2025 paid him R5.5 million, yet included no requirement to prepare a handover report. While his terms of reference mandated regular reporting, the handover was treated only as a professional courtesy.
A structured handover, the DA argues, would have been invaluable to the incoming NSFAS board, facing audit disclaimers, allegations of mismanagement, and corruption—the very issues that led to Nomvalo’s appointment.
The DA has signalled its intention to probe further by submitting additional parliamentary questions to clarify Nomvalo’s contract terms—including whether the NSFAS board or Minister Nkabane have approached him to secure a handover.
“The hopes and dreams of students cannot be left unfulfilled due to gross maladministration,” the DA underscored, committing to hold NSFAS accountable for clarity and transparency.
