Ngqeleni: Shocking classroom violence when a teacher suspended after brutally beating grade 9 student in front of peers, sparking social media outrage and raising concerns about school safety and discipline practices.
A disturbing video has surfaced on social media, showing a teacher from Matanzima Junior Secondary School in Mthatha wrestling a student in front of the class, the teacher’s actions have sparked outrage and raised questions about the fine line between discipline and abuse. While the Eastern Cape Department of Education has condemned the incident and suspended the teacher pending an investigation, the incident has left many wondering what drove the teacher to such extreme behaviour.
A question remained if it was a moment of frustration and loss of control, or a deeper systemic issue within the education system. The incident also raises concerns about the impact on the student, the classmates who witnessed the ordeal, and the broader implications for teacher-student relationships.
An unnamed citizen cited that, “As the investigation unfolds, we are left to ponder the delicate balance between maintaining discipline and respecting the rights and dignity of students. One thing is certain – our schools should be safe spaces for learning, growth, and development, not arenas for violence and trauma”, stressed the citizen.
Mali Mtima, the department’s spokesperson has condemned the incident and confirmed the teacher’s suspension.
We have taken a strong stance against this incident and responded promptly to prevent escalation. Our initial response was included providing psycho-social support to the affected learner and witnesses, followed by a collaborative meeting with the parents, the child and the school. We have also taken disciplinary action against the teacher, who has been suspended pending a thorough investigation. Upon completion, a verdict will be rendered and we will take appropriate action, – clarified Mtima.
