On the 21st of October 2025, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) has brought hope to the Soyakha Community Centre in Sweetwater, Qonce. The centre, which cares for the elderly, has received vital resources and a firm commitment of land donation from the municipality. The support forms part of BCMM’s drive to uplift communities in Ward 44.
What Happened
The centre received two JoJo tanks to improve water access and 1,500 seedlings to promote food security. Sewing materials, including wool, beads, and accessories, were also provided to enhance skills training. A new ironing station was added to support the sewing group, while signage boards were installed to give the centre more visibility. The land donation will provide a permanent home, ensuring the centre’s long-term sustainability. Three workers will soon be hired through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) to help maintain the facility.
Official Response
Ward 44 Councillor Mwezi Daniso thanked Executive Mayor Princess Faku for her quick response. “We are truly grateful to the Mayor for supporting the centre,” he said. “This initiative restores the dignity of our elderly.”
Community Impact
Residents welcomed the support, saying it shows what can be achieved when government and communities work together. The centre now stands as a symbol of care, unity, and hope for the elderly in Sweetwater and beyond.
