On 15 September 2025, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality launched its Tourism Month activities with a 5km and 10km hike in Tyusha under the theme “It’s time to explore, adore and sustain.” The event brought together residents, hikers, and tourists to showcase the Buffalo City’s cultural and natural attractions.

What Happened

The Buffalo City Tourism Department hosted the hike to show wellness, recreation, and the importance of embracing local destinations. Participants explored scenic routes in Tyusha while being reminded that the Buffalo City offers diverse tourism opportunities beyond its urban hubs.

The hike was part of a series of events aimed at promoting both community wellbeing and the local tourism sector during Tourism Month.

Official Response

General Manager for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Phindile Mavundla, said the initiative tied together health and tourism.

“It is truly a pleasure to reflect on something very close to both tourism and our personal wellbeing – the importance of being healthy, exploring our City, and embracing the great gift of hiking,” Mavundla said.

She added:

“As a Buffalo City, we are blessed with rich history, vibrant culture and breathtaking natural beauty. Yet too often, we overlook what is right on our doorstep.”

Community Impact

The initiative aims to position Buffalo City as a tourism destination while encouraging residents to rediscover local landmarks. Events such as these are expected to boost domestic tourism and instill pride in the City’s natural and cultural heritage.

The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality also confirmed that the next hike will take place in Mdantsane on Saturday, 20 September 2025, inviting the community to participate.
