Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality says it has carried out a bylaw enforcement and clamping operation at Belgravia Place in kuGompo following complaints from residents about unsafe food handling and illegal business practices.

According to the municipality, officials acted after multiple reports raised concerns about the use of open fires, poor hygiene standards in food preparation, and businesses operating without proper approvals. Authorities say these conditions pose a serious health risk to customers and have affected nearby households, especially due to ongoing smoke from cooking activities.

Municipal teams say they had previously engaged with the business owner and provided guidance on how to comply with city regulations. However, officials report that non-compliance continued, with the operation allegedly expanding without authorisation.

The enforcement action is part of the city’s broader effort to ensure businesses follow health and safety bylaws. The municipality has reminded residents and informal traders that starting a business requires proper approval processes, including compliance with hygiene and land-use regulations.

For communities across the Eastern Cape, where informal food trading is common, the situation highlights a growing tension between livelihoods and public health. Many small traders depend on daily food sales, but failure to meet safety standards can put entire communities at risk—especially in densely populated areas.

At the same time, the crackdown signals that municipalities are under pressure to respond to resident complaints about environmental and health hazards. In areas like Bizana, Lusikisiki, and Flagstaff, similar issues around informal trading and compliance have been raised, though enforcement varies.

It is not yet clear whether fines were issued or if any businesses were shut down during the operation. This has not been confirmed.

Residents are being urged to report unsafe food practices and to ensure that any business activity in their areas meets municipal requirements.

The municipality says it will continue with bylaw enforcement operations to maintain safe and orderly neighbourhoods.

This story raises wider questions about how local governments can balance enforcement with support for small businesses trying to operate legally.
