Residents of Bizana’s Highland area took to the streets in a powerful show of anger and frustration over what they describe as “terrifying killings” and rampant sexual violence in the community.
Mr. Phikolozi Sirhamza, Secretary-General of the Socialist Party of South Africa, said the protest was a direct response to the wave of violent crimes plaguing the town.
“People here are living in fear. Weekend after weekend, there are murders — some victims are even raped. We can’t stay silent while our community is destroyed,” Sirhamza said.
The outrage intensified following a court appearance by a suspect who allegedly confessed to killing two people. He and other accused individuals are also linked to the murder of a local resident, Siphelele, along with several other victims whose names have not been released.
Residents say the justice system is failing them, citing the regular granting of bail to murder suspects.
“When killers get bail, they come back and do it again,” said one protester. “We chant DOWN WITH BAIL, DOWN! because these crimes must end.”
The community is demanding that the municipality and police enforce stricter regulations on taverns, insisting that only licensed establishments be allowed to operate. They believe many of the murders happen outside unregistered taverns.

The protests also highlighted the rising number of rape cases, with disturbing reports of older men sexually assaulting children.
“We are being killed like animals, and our children are not safe,” said another resident. “We need the police, government, and municipality to act now.”
As the chants of DOWN WITH BAIL, DOWN! echoed through Bizana, the message was clear — the community is no longer willing to tolerate violence and inaction.
