350 community members from Port St Johns’ Ward 09 have received homes under the Mkhanzini 350 housing project. The handover formed part of a joint education and housing initiative led by the Department of Human Settlements and the Port St Johns Local Municipality.

The event was facilitated by Acting Housing Officer Mr T Zifune, who urged residents to submit accurate information and documents when applying for housing.

What the officials said

Ward 09 Councillor Ndabeni welcomed the initiative and thanked all involved, saying it had brought real change to vulnerable households.

Delivering the keynote, Ms F Maposa from the Department of Human Settlements outlined the department’s mission to ensure fair access to suitable homes. She also walked residents through the criteria and documents required to apply for government housing.

“We are not just building houses,” said Maposa. “We are building futures.”

Who received houses

The final handover phase of the Mkhanzini 350 project prioritised the most vulnerable groups in the ward. These included:

• Child-headed households
• People with disabilities
• Elderly residents
• Low-income families

Each household received keys to a completed RDP home as part of the formal handover ceremony.
