A candlelight vigil, prayer, and a powerful pledge were at the heart of a recent 16 Days of Activism event led by the Butterworth Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC).
The programme began at the Butterworth Magistrates’ Court, where officials and community members gathered before marching together to the TCC. Among them were court prosecutors, traffic officers, SAPS, and social workers, all joining to show their commitment to ending gender-based violence (GBV).
What happened during the march

The event honoured survivors with a prayer by Reverend Hange and a moment of silence. A formal pledge against GBV was signed by:
- Prosecutors and Court Preparation Officers
- SOCA Unit and Legal Aid SA
- SAPS and Mnquma Traffic Services
- Social Development and Community Development Workers
- Mnquma Special Programmes Unit
Community outreach at Fingoland Mall taxi rank
After the formal proceedings, the group marched to the taxi rank at Fingoland Mall. They were joined by librarians from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and local NGOs who handed out information and spoke to residents.
