From a township stoep in Eldorado Park, Legends Barbershop has expanded nationally, and on Saturday, opened its 65th store at Wild Coast Sun Resort.
Rated by the African Hair Awards Council as the leading barbershop in South Africa, the four-seater shop at the beachside resort in Bizana and near Port Edward will be staffed by five employees, said owner Sheldon Tatchell. “We offer shaving services for men and short haircuts for both men and women, including fade, dye and line design, as well as wave control and twist sponge.”
From 12pm until 3pm on Saturday, launch activities included DJ Tira spinning on the decks, hosted by Skits by Sphe, with the store giving 20 away free haircuts to people who joined in on the action.
Legends will be advertising for locals interested in becoming barbers, and sending them to the Legends Training Academy in Durban to qualify. “We pass skills on for free to close the unemployment gap with aspiring barbers,” Tatchell said. “As the business grows and more stores open, students of the Academy can be employed.”
Hip hop star Siyabonga “Big Zulu” Nene recently launched a men’s grooming range called Nkabi Beard Range, in conjunction with the popular barbershop.
This is the second Legends Barbershop branch at a Sun International property, the first having opened at Sun City many years ago. Wild Coast Sun General Manager Peter Tshidi wished the new store luck and said he looked forward to having a professional shave at the new store.
