A former mineworker turned farmer, Phumza Sambatha, is now a celebrated agricultural entrepreneur after her business, PUFESO Agri-enterprise, was crowned Top Entrepreneur in Smallholder Farming at the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture’s Women Entrepreneur Awards in the Chris Hani District.
Sambatha, who hails from Xhibeni location in Ngcobo, co-founded PUFESO after losing her job in the mining sector. “After losing my work, I decided to partner with another woman to establish an agriculture venture. We started with poultry and expanded to vegetable farming in 2023,” she said.
Driven by a goal to ensure food security and generate income, PUFESO has grown into a successful enterprise. The business supplies produce to local retailers like Boxer and Spar, including outlets in Mthatha and the popular 50/50 restaurant. The enterprise employs 10 permanent staff and hires casual workers regularly — including two people with disabilities — in line with Sambatha’s commitment to inclusive employment.
Sambatha praised the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture for its consistent support. “Their regular visits and the placement of skilled unemployed graduates really empowered us. In May, the department gave us 500 chicks — that support made a big difference,” she explained.
PUFESO Agri-enterprise walked away with a R30,000 cash prize. Sambatha plans to use the winnings to pay workers and buy production inputs. “I never expected the recognition. I am very happy,” she added.
Other winners from the event include:
- Phuthikazi Swaphi, 34, of Komani, founder of Mandlovu Ginger, who received R15,000 as the Top Entrepreneur in Agro-Processing. She started her business in 2022 and now supplies Lukhanji Spar, Mabhovula Stores, and local events with her ginger beer.
- Qwebe-Qwebe Enterprise took home R15,000 for Top Entrepreneur in Commercial Farming.
- Siyokhana Vegetable Project earned R10,000 as 1st Runner-Up in the Smallholder Farming category.
The Department’s recognition event underscored the vital role of women in agricultural development and job creation across the province.
