The bail hearing of a taxi driver from KwaZulu-Natal who reportedly raped a 17-year-old girl in rural Nompondo, close to Hluhluwe, fed her a pie, and made drink brake fluid before she died, was postponed.

The 24-year-old taxi driver was detained last Wednesday after 17-year-old Andiswa Mdletshe died in January 29.

According to the Mdletshe family, the teenager was sent by her mother to buy groceries in town and came back crying, complaining of stomach cramps, vomiting and shivering.

She recounted her ordeal to her parents but died in hospital later that night.

The driver appeared at the Mtubatuba magistrate’s court on Monday for a formal bail application, but it was postponed.

His matter has been moved to the Hluhluwe magistrate’s court for a bail application on March 07.

Andiswa’s grandfather, Thishela Nkonyane, said the family was relieved that the suspect has been arrested. He said they were hoping the court case would reveal why the suspect committed the crime.

“All we want is the truth and that is what will set us free,” said Nkonyane.
