When you lose your job, are retrenched, or your contract ends, you can apply for Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) benefits online through the official uFiling system. Here is exactly how the process works in 2026.
Who Can Claim UIF?
According to the Department of Employment and Labour, you may qualify if:
- You contributed to UIF while employed
- You worked more than 24 hours per month
- You are unemployed, retrenched, or your contract ended
- You are not receiving a salary
- You have not claimed UIF for the same period before
You cannot claim if you resigned voluntarily (unless under constructive dismissal circumstances handled by CCMA).
Step 1: Register on uFiling
Visit: https://ufiling.labour.gov.za
You will need:
- South African ID number
- Valid cellphone number
- Email address
- Banking details
Create a profile and verify via OTP.
