The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has confirmed the killing of one of its councillors, Ndukenhle Duma, in the politically volatile and fiercely contested Nongoma local municipality of northern KwaZulu-Natal. The assassination took place near the Ithendele coal mine in Mtubatuba, a site notorious for its history of violence.

Duma, who was recently elected in a by-election to represent one of the wards, was targeted in the attack. He had been actively involved in the community and held tenders to provide heavy plant services to the coal mine. The circumstances surrounding his assassination suggest a deeply concerning escalation of political violence in the region.

During the shooting targeting Duma, tragedy struck as an innocent bystander, a learner, was mistakenly shot and killed at the scene. Additionally, three other learners who were traveling on a scholar transport were injured in the crossfire and have been rushed to the hospital for medical attention.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and has once again highlighted the dangers faced by those involved in politics, particularly in areas marked by high political tensions. The Nongoma municipality has a history of political volatility, and this latest attack underscores the urgent need for authorities to address the root causes of violence and ensure the safety and security of all residents.

The IFP has condemned the assassination of Councillor Duma and expressed condolences to his family and loved ones. They have called for a thorough investigation into the incident to bring the perpetrators to justice and to prevent further bloodshed in the region.

Local authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the attack to come forward and assist with the investigation. They have also deployed additional resources to the area to maintain calm and prevent any further violence.

As the community mourns the loss of both Councillor Duma and the innocent bystander, there are growing calls for greater efforts to promote peace and stability in Nongoma and other politically volatile regions of KwaZulu-Natal. Only through collective action and a commitment to dialogue can lasting solutions be found to end the cycle of violence that continues to plague the region.
