The Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene has ordered an immediate arrest of the suspect who murdered the 52-year-old driver of Vice Chancellor, Professor Sakhela Buhlungu of the University of Fort Hare. In an incident that was reported to have taken place on Friday night, the 6th of January 2023 at about 08:20 outside the VC’s home in Dikeni, formerly known as Alice.

Reports state that the driver was arriving at the home of Vice Chancellor,when an unknown vehicle with unidentified occupants approached. Shots were fired by the suspects at the driver who succumbed to gunshot injuries at the scene.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said the SAPS was alerted to the shooting incident by members of the public. It is believed that on arrival at the scene, the body of the deceased driver was found in the vehicle.

“The suspects later escaped in their getaway vehicle. Police have registered a murder case for investigation”, said Brigadier Kinana

He added that no arrest have been made at this stage and that the circumstances surrounding the incident will also form part of the investigation.

According to Kinana, the Vice Chancellor was not in the car at th time of the incident.
