Two suspects were arrested during a targeted police operation in the dense coastal forests of Bonga locality, Coffee Bay, on Monday, 28 July 2025. The operation, led by the SAPS Mounted Unit and Coffee Bay Vispol members, forms part of ongoing efforts to curb violent crime and remove illegal firearms in the Mqanduli policing area.
At around 10:50, police on horseback patrolling rugged terrain apprehended a 23-year-old man in possession of two unlicensed 9mm Norinco pistols. One had an erased serial number and no ammunition, while the second contained live rounds and had a visible serial number. Circulation checks revealed that one firearm was registered to a 50-year-old local man, who had failed to report it stolen, raising questions about compliance with firearm regulations.
A second suspect, aged 26, was also arrested after being found with a Glock 9mm pistol, its serial number erased and loaded with live ammunition.
Both suspects were arrested on the spot and are due to appear in the Mqanduli Magistrate’s Court, charged with unlawful possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Investigations are ongoing, and police have indicated that further charges may be added, as the suspects are allegedly linked to a recent robbery in the Ngqeleni area.
OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, commended the success of the joint operation. “Working together as a formidable team to achieve one common goal is the best practice. These arrests reflect the commitment of our members to rid our communities of dangerous weapons and criminal elements,” he said.
