A police officer has been killed and another left fighting for her life after a shooting in New Brighton under the Ngangelizwe precinct in Mthatha, on Wednesday afternoon, 22 April 2026.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape confirmed that the two officers, both attached to the Madeira Detective Unit, were shot at approximately 16:30 in the New Brighton area while returning home from duty.
A male officer died at the scene, while his female colleague was rushed to hospital in critical condition.
Authorities have not yet released the identities of the officers, stating that names will only be made public once their families have been formally notified. The circumstances surrounding the attack, including the number of suspects and the motive, remain unclear at this stage.
Police say the area is still an active crime scene, with investigations underway. No arrests have been confirmed.
