What Happened

On 13 January 2014, in KwaDwesi, Joja kidnapped and raped a nine-year-old girl. On 7 March 2015, he abducted and raped a 27-year-old woman in Veeplaas, assaulting her with fists and a knife. On 31 January 2016, in Lusikisiki, he broke into a 15-year-old’s home, stole two cellphones, and raped her at knifepoint.

Joja was arrested on 11 June 2024 after DNA evidence linked him to the sexual assaults. He entered a plea agreement under Section 105A of the Criminal Procedure Act, sparing the victims from testifying.

Court Outcome

Judge sentenced Joja to three life terms for rape and additional sentences for kidnapping, assault, robbery, and housebreaking. All sentences will run concurrently, resulting in life imprisonment.

The court cited his use of weapons, violence, and targeting of vulnerable victims as aggravating factors. Joja was also declared unfit to possess a firearm, and furthermore, his name will be added to the National Register for Sex Offenders.

Official Response

Eastern Cape DPP Barry Madolo welcomed the sentence, praising investigators and prosecutors. “This judgment sends a clear message that sexual offenders will face justice,” he said.
