The Ntabankulu Local Municipality has released a public statement condemning the alleged rape of a 12-year-old girl in the Macwerheni area, Ward 02, reportedly by her stepfather. The abuse is believed to have occurred over several years, only coming to light after the child became pregnant.

Speaking on 9 April 2025, Mayor Cllr P.T. Sobuthongo expressed deep outrage at the incident, describing it as a “heinous violation” of a child’s rights. She strongly denounced the abuse and called on residents to work closely with law enforcement to prevent such crimes in the future.

“We must whisper when we suspect these crimes are happening. The fight against gender-based violence and pedophilia can only be won when we work together as communities,” said Sobuthongo.

According to the municipality, a rape case has been opened with the South African Police Service (SAPS), and the suspect has fled his homestead. He remains at large, and a police investigation is ongoing. Community members are being urged to share any information that could lead to his capture.

The young survivor has been admitted to hospital and is currently receiving medical treatment and support.

The municipality reiterated its stance on zero tolerance for child abuse and sexual violence, stating that more must be done at the grassroots level to protect children and vulnerable individuals from such atrocities.

Members of the public with any information are encouraged to contact Lungisile Mzanywa, Head of Communications at Ntabankulu Local Municipality, on 066 486 7405.
