Suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) deputy chief Julius Mkhwanazi is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday after his arrest over the weekend.
Mkhwanazi was taken into custody on Saturday by the South African Police Service’s Madlanga Commission Task Team and is facing charges of corruption, fraud and defeating the ends of justice, according to police.
The arrest follows ongoing investigations linked to testimony presented at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where allegations of serious misconduct within the metro police have been examined.
Police have indicated that the charges are not directly tied to specific incidents raised during the commission, including the death of a suspected robber or the so-called “blue light” scandal.
Mkhwanazi has been on precautionary suspension since November 2025 after his initial appearance before the commission, where his testimony drew scrutiny from investigators.
His court appearance is expected to clarify the charges against him and outline the next steps in the case.
