The part of Women’s Month celebrations, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in KwaZulu-Natal joined an International Women’s Day event at Tongaat Central Library. The initiative was a partnership with eThekwini Municipality’s Tongaat Central Library, the South African Police Service in Tongaat, Haven of Rest Tongaat, and the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS).

Here’s how the event helped women and the community address gender-based violence (GBV):

  1. Learn About Reporting Procedures: Attendees were informed about how to report incidents of GBV and femicide safely and effectively.
  2. Understand the Legal Process: NPA officials explained how perpetrators are prosecuted and the role of the justice system.
  3. Community Engagement: Speakers, including Deputy Minister Narend Singh, stressed the importance of public participation in fighting GBV.
  4. Empowerment Through Culture: Local female artists led dancing and singing sessions to celebrate women and build solidarity.
  5. Resources and Support: Organizations present shared information about shelters, counseling, and support networks for survivors.

The event provided a platform to educate, empower, and unite women and the broader community against gender-based violence while highlighting the legal measures in place to protect victims.
