The operation, conducted by the municipality in partnership with O.R. Tambo DM, SAPS, and Home Affairs, aimed to audit businesses in the area and ensure compliance with relevant regulations.

The operation revealed a disturbing trend of non-compliance among local businesses, with issues ranging from illicit and expired goods to undocumented foreign nationals. Three foreign nationals were arrested for failing to provide identification documents, while many shops were found to be operating without the necessary licences.

  • Poor Hygiene: Many shops were found to have poor hygiene standards, with two establishments instructed to close and address the issue.
  • Suspected Expired Goods: Suspected amended expiry date labels were found, and an investigation is underway to confirm the findings.
  • Overstocking and Structural Issues: Many shops were found to be overstocked, leading to cleanliness issues, while some structures were non-compliant in terms of ventilation and other factors.
  • Electrification and Gas Cylinder Issues: Electrification issues, including wiring and bridged meters, were identified, while some shops were found to be storing gas cylinders inside their premises.
