The OR Tambo Prestige Awards brought emotional moments and heartfelt pride as police officers and CPF members were honoured for protecting the Mthatha community. The event showed that when people stand together, real change becomes possible.
Their Story
Behind every uniform is a story of sacrifice, long nights, and difficult choices. On 19 November 2025, District Commissioner Major General K.N. Modishana brought those stories to the centre stage. He wanted his officers and CPF partners to feel seen, appreciated, and uplifted.
The ceremony grew from a strong partnership between SAPS, CPF, the Department of Community Safety, OR Tambo District Municipality, and the Local Business Community Forum. Many stakeholders joined the celebration, including NAFCOC, IPID, NPA, Public Works, Home Affairs, COGTA, POPCRU, and SAPU.
Warrant Officer and Reverend N. Matinisi opened the ceremony with a prayer. His message was simple but powerful: service comes with challenges, yet members should stay encouraged and remember the purpose behind their calling.
Soon after, Community Safety HOD Mr P.F. Mbambo praised the teamwork that made the day possible. Major General Modishana later spoke warmly about the District Development Model and the partnership spirit that shaped the district’s successes. He thanked the Acting District Manager for Community Safety for building unity across all sectors.
The Event/Occasion
The Prestige Awards were created to celebrate excellence, courage, and commitment. Major General Modishana reminded everyone that the day belonged to the men and women working tirelessly to make Mthatha safer. The awards also recognised the CPF’s important role, especially because members volunteer their time without expecting payment.
Colonel P. Majaja encouraged continued integrity and professionalism in community-oriented policing. Then Mr Mbula explained the nomination process and emphasized the special categories added for CPF, showing appreciation for their selflessness.
During his keynote address, Executive Mayor Mr Ngqondwana applauded the joint efforts of SAPS and CPF. He said their teamwork supported the ideals of the Freedom Charter, where safety and security are basic rights. He also urged the public to play an active role in crime prevention.
Dozens of officers and CPF members received awards for outstanding service, both as individuals and in teams.
Community Reactions
For many in the room, the ceremony felt like a moment of healing and recognition. Ward Councillor N. Nomvethe offered a heartfelt vote of thanks, noting how the event reflected the strength of the OR Tambo community.
Residents who attended said the awards inspired them and reminded them that community safety is a shared responsibility. Many applauded the unity between police, CPF, government, and businesses, saying such partnerships bring hope during difficult times.
