More than 600 undocumented migrants were arrested during a joint law enforcement operation in Mayfair, Johannesburg. The raid took place from 17 November 2025 and involved Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), SAPS, and the Department of Home Affairs. Officials say the arrests form part of a wider drive to restore safety in high-risk areas.
What Happened?
JMPD led an intelligence-driven raid in Mayfair after ongoing concerns about overcrowded and hijacked buildings. Officers arrested 217 women and 413 men found without legal documentation.
The operation formed part of a broader, coordinated crime-prevention push. It focused on enforcing immigration laws while also disrupting networks linked to illegal entry into the city.
“This was a clear demonstration of what agencies can achieve when they work together decisively,” said Mgcini Tshwaku, MMC for Public Safety.
Official Response
Authorities confirmed that all detainees are being processed by Home Affairs in line with legislation. Tshwaku praised the professionalism of the agencies and said more raids are planned across Johannesburg.
He noted that upcoming operations will focus on human-trafficking syndicates and criminal groups facilitating illegal immigration.
City officials added that the crackdown aims to stabilize vulnerable communities that have struggled with unsafe buildings and crime.
Community Impact
Residents in Mayfair have raised concerns about overcrowding in hijacked buildings, which often operate without safety compliance. Local leaders hope the renewed clampdown will help curb related crime and improve living conditions.
Moreover, the operation is expected to bring greater visibility of law enforcement in areas struggling with instability.
