The Provincial MuniMEC Meeting, led by MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Zolile Williams, on 12 November 2025, bringing together municipal leaders and sector partners from across the Eastern Cape. - Eskom’s electrification progress, which aims to expand reliable energy access to underserved communities.
- Customary Initiation safety measures, focusing on legislative compliance, emergency response, and community awareness.
- The Provincial Drug Master Plan, which outlines strategies to combat substance abuse and promote healthier communities.
- The introduction of the Non-Negotiable Booklet, a new management guide designed to promote accountability, efficiency, and sustainability in municipal governance.
MEC Zolile Williams praised the constructive dialogue and reaffirmed government’s commitment to effective and ethical local governance.
Official Response
The meeting received strong support from participating municipalities and sector stakeholders. Many officials welcomed the Non-Negotiable Booklet as a valuable tool for improving municipal performance and accountability.
Eskom representatives also reaffirmed their dedication to accelerating electrification projects, particularly in rural and informal areas.
“Energy access is central to economic growth and dignity. We are working with municipalities to ensure no community is left behind,” said an Eskom representative.
The Department of Health and traditional leaders expressed appreciation for the focus on initiation safety, emphasizing that better coordination can prevent seasonal fatalities and safeguard cultural practices.
