The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) arrested 30 motorists for drunken driving during weekend law enforcement blitz operations across the Inland Region. The crackdown, which ran from 22-23 November 2023, targeted high-risk areas in Berlin and Qonce as part of the Metro’s push for safer roads.
What Happened
BCMM Traffic Law Enforcement teams increased visibility overnight and carried out roadblocks, compliance checks, and random breathalyser testing. Their efforts resulted in 30 arrests for drunken driving.
Of these cases:
• 8 drivers were arrested in Berlin.
• 22 drivers were arrested in Qonce.
Officials say the numbers show ongoing risky behaviour that continues to endanger lives. The Metro plans to intensify operations throughout the festive season and will monitor unroadworthy vehicles, unlicensed drivers, excessive speeding, and other violations.
Official Response
Executive Mayor Princess Faku delivered a firm warning to all road users.
“Our message is simple, if you drink and drive, you will be arrested. We will not tolerate behaviour that endangers the lives of innocent people. We urge all motorists to obey the law, prioritise safety, and protect their own lives and the lives of others,” she said.
The Municipality also thanked law enforcement officers for working late-night and early-morning shifts to safeguard communities.
Community Impact
The arrests signal a strong stance against irresponsible driving as BCMM strengthens efforts to reduce road fatalities. Residents can expect more high-visibility deployments as the Metro pushes for safer travel during the busy holiday period and beyond.
