On 22 October 2025, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the nominees for its annual awards, with South African defenders Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Tylon Smith both earning nominations for Young Player of the Year.
What Happened?
The announcement comes as a proud moment for South African football. Mbekezeli Mbokazi, who made his Orlando Pirates debut on 2025, has also won Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player award, quickly risen to prominence with strong performances for both his club and Bafana Bafana.
His composure, defensive awareness, and leadership have earned him a place among Africa’s top young prospects. Mbokazi’s nomination follows a breakthrough season that saw him cement a regular spot in the Pirates’ lineup and make his national team debut.
Joining him on the prestigious shortlist is Tylon Smith, the national Under-20 defender, who has also had a memorable season. Smith captained Amajita to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (U20 AFCON) title earlier 2025 and was named Player of the Tournament for his commanding displays.
After that triumph, Smith secured a move to English Championship side Queens Park Rangers (QPR) and went on to represent South Africa at the FIFA U20 World Cup.

Official Response
The South African Football Association (SAFA) congratulated both players, describing their nominations as a testament to the quality of talent emerging from the country.
“We’re extremely proud of Mbekezeli and Tylon,.Their achievements reflect the dedication and skill within our youth structures. These nominations place South African football firmly back on the continental stage,” said SAFA President, Danny Jordaan.
Community Impact
The double nomination has sparked excitement among local fans, who see it as a sign that South Africa’s youth development pipeline is thriving again. Football analysts praised the duo for inspiring the next generation of players by proving that discipline and opportunity can lead to continental recognition.
