From 21 to 24 October 2025, the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature had a meeting in Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality for its “Taking Legislature to the People” programme. This event united MECs, government departments, entities and citizens in a direct dialogue across all 50 wards. The goal is to ensure public voices shape policy and oversight.
What Happened
During the outreach, the Legislature’s Portfolio Committee Chairs for Social Development and Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism presented their reports to residents. As part of the event, MECs and officials visited each ward to engage openly with citizens. Residents raised issues ranging from service delivery delays to environmental concerns. Officials affirmed that the programme runs until 24 October to encourage maximum public participation.
Official Response
Government representatives mentioned the initiative as important for transparent governance and citizen-centred service delivery. A provincial spokesperson stated:
“Bringing the Legislature into the wards closes the gap between communities and their representatives.”
Additionally, local councillors applauded the focus on Ward-level issues and noted that follow-up actions will track progress on key demands.
Community Impact
Residents welcomed the forum for giving them a platform to speak and be heard. One participant commented that the event allowed them to “raise issues without waiting for the formal session in the capital.” Local organisations also said the engagement reinforced the importance of accountability in local government. The outreach is expected to strengthen community trust and improve follow-through on service commitments.
