The Amantshangase Residents Association in Mbizana has called for urgent government intervention amid a surge in violent crime, including rape and murder, within the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality. Residents will gather on Thursday, 9 October 2025, at Sithukuthezi Community Hall to hand over a memorandum to the Acting Minister of Police.
What Happened
According to the association, the community has been gripped by fear following a series of disturbing crimes. On 25 September 2025, a 17-year-old matric learner was gang-raped in the Amantshangase Administrative Area. Earlier this year, in April 2025, a 91-year-old woman from Ward 03 was also raped, while in August 2025, a 19-year-old woman from the same ward was brutally murdered.
Despite these incidents, no arrests have been made to date. Residents say the ongoing violence reflects a broader failure of law enforcement in rural areas.
Official Response
“We feel abandoned by the justice system and unprotected by the state,” said Joseph Bova, Chairperson of the Amantshangase Residents Association. “Our community deserves justice and safety. We will no longer suffer in silence.”
The association has invited law enforcement, civil society groups, and media outlets to join the upcoming demonstration. The memorandum, to be delivered to the Acting Minister of Police, will demand swift arrests and a long-term safety plan for rural communities like Amantshangase.
Community Impact
Residents say the ongoing violence has created a climate of fear and anger, particularly among women and school learners. Community leaders have urged parents to remain vigilant and for police patrols to be increased in high-risk areas.
Activists from nearby wards are expected to attend the Thursday meeting in solidarity, signalling a growing regional movement against gender-based violence and lawlessness.
