Residents of O.R. Tambo District turned out in large numbers on the 20 of September in Ntafufu, under Port St. Johns Local Municipality, to celebrate Pondoland’s cultural heritage. The event brought together traditional leaders, the Imbumba yamampondo, women’s royal structures (inkciyo), business leaders, and community members.
WHAT HAPPENED
The cultural celebration in Ntafufu formed part of Heritage Month activities, focusing on reconnecting the Mpondo nation with its roots. Traditional leaders stressed the importance of keeping customs alive, while cultural groups showcased dances, rituals, and storytelling.
Organisers said the event aimed to:
- Remind the Mpondo nation of its traditions and cultural identity.
- Unite people of different cultures, languages, and practices in harmony.
- Preserve indigenous knowledge, customs, and beliefs for future generations.
- Promote respect, unity, and mutual understanding while building a non-discriminatory future.
