This year’s focus is on turning museums, archives, and heritage sites into active spaces for innovation, inclusion, and community development, while still honouring the democratic values of dignity, equality, and justice. Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, said heritage institutions must be more than “museums of dust and silence” and should instead become places that inspire and empower young people to shape a better future.

The 2025 national Heritage Day celebration will be hosted in Oudtshoorn, Western Cape, in partnership with the provincial government. The programme highlights how heritage can be used as a tool for social change, identity, and economic growth.

In addition, the department will partner with the Association for Ex-Political Prisoners (AEPP) and the Robben Island Museum (RIM) to host a special Reunion of Ex-Political Prisoners on 27 September. Held under the theme “Reuniting with Robben Island as the Stronghold that Fortified Our Resistance to Achieve Our Freedom,” the event will pay tribute to those who sacrificed their freedom during the liberation struggle.
